A violoncello bridge

sul ponticello was founded in 2009 to present chamber music performed by professional musicians in a series of free concerts for the general public in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

THE NAME

In Italian, the musical direction sul ponticello literally means “on the bridge”. It is a direction to string players to play a passage with the bow very close to the bridge of the instrument, producing a thin sound rich in higher overtones. This is often used by composers to create mystical, ethereal effects.
